SENATE 2019: Chime Can Never Defeat Ekweremadu – Ray Nnaji Boasts
Alexandra Umeh, ENUGU – Nigeria (GVE) – Amid recent speculations that Sullivan Chime, a former Governor of Enugu State, is planning to challenge the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu for the Enugu West Senatorial position, Barrister Ray Nnaji, a former Commissioner in the state has reacted, saying that there is no way the former governor can beat the sitting Deputy President if at all he (Chime) is given the ticket by his party.
In an interview with journalists over the weekend, Ray who insisted that Chime does not any way stand a chance to win the position should Ekweremadu decide to return to the Senate in 2019, dismissed Chime with a wave of hand and advised him to go for something else.
Nnaji, a former national auditor of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), said Chime would have gotten the chance if he had remained in PDP, because Ekweremadu may just step down for him to win.
“There is no way Chime can beat Ekweremadu if at all they give him the ticket because the All Progressive Congress (APC) may not give him the ticket. If they give him (Ekweremadu) the ticket, of course you know that nobody can beat him in the PDP primary, except he decides not to go.
“If he decides to go and his opponent is Chime, he will be in his house drinking and the results will be rolling in his favor. Chime is not a match for Ekweremdau at all in all ramifications.
“I have said it times without number, I even said it when he mistakenly decamped to APC that he has lost the chance of going to the Senate. Obviously if he had remained in PDP, Ekweremdau would have problem, in the sense that people may not agree that he returns for the fifth time.
“Not because he is a better candidate than Ekweremadu or that he can beat Ekweremadu in a contest, but they could tell Ekweremadu to step down for another person to go. For him to have left the party, it is easier for Ekweremadu to coast home to victory,” Nnaji boasted.
The legal practitioner further hailed Ekweremadu, describing him as a grassroots politician who understands his environment very well and will always defeat Chime even though he was once the state governor.
“Ekweremadu is a grassroots politician and he knows the terrain very well. Sullivan was governor but he is not grounded; he cannot match Ekweremadu in any way.
“It’s very unfortunate for him that he is coming from the same senatorial zone with Ekweremadu. I am not from that zone but being a politician in this state, I know exactly the capabilities of so many people including that of Sullivan. It’s better for him to look for something else, not senate; except Ekweremadu is not interested in going.
“And knowing Ekweremadu very well, if Sullivan indicates interest he will say let me go and match him and PDP will give him the ticket to go and beat him very well,” he added.
